Only make Life changing decisions and choices when you are clear headed with a sound mind.
Throughout my life I’ve noticed many times bad ideas pop into my head when I’m having a bad day. My definition of a bad day is my head not being clear, I feel very compulsive, bored, lonely, or any other negative vibes.
When I was a younger man I’m sure I made a few bad choices in life when I was having one of these bad days where my mind wasn’t where it was suppose to be, and at the time I wasn’t conscious of this.
Now that I am older I still have bad days every now and then (hey who doesn’t?), but I’ve come to remember and rely on the fact that bad days usually only last one day, and there will still be plenty of good days ahead. Knowing this I have made myself a rule that I will not make any life changing decisions when I know I’m having one of these days. Life changing decisions can be anything from moving to another state, changing careers, planning my future, and even analyzing myself,.
I believe when I have such bad days that my mind is not working at 100 percent, and any decision I make on this day that has life changing consequence will probably not be 100 percent either. So my strategy to counter this is to simply get through the day without making a bad choice or decision. I try to relax, go for a walk, take a hot shower, and hope for a better day tomorrow. We all know our bodies and personalities pretty well so I’m guessing we all know when we are having a good day and when we are not, and going from there we can choose when to really think about life changing choices and when not to.
The same strategy can be used by younger adults and kids as well. Of course I wasn’t aware of this strategy when I was a kid, but if I did I could of probably saved myself a lot of trouble. One example is when I was a young teenager I had a compulsive urge to shoplift. Instead of realizing I wasn’t thinking very well, I went ahead and tried to shoplift but instead was caught and suffered the consequence, which was a lot of community service involving manual labor to work off my crime.
Another example of when I was a little older I decided to drop a class in college, because I thought it was too hard. I even quit a whole semester of college once because I wasn’t thinking clearly, and instead of waiting one or two more days, or perhaps soldiering on through a class or two, I quit, later regretting it when I felt better and knew I could of completed the semester and classes.
My advice to all of you who are having a bad day, week, or month, is give it a few more days. Stop what you’re doing and relax. Try to plan something fun in the coming days and after you are done doing what you planned then sit down and think about a decision you have to make. Chances are your mind will be a lot closer to 100% than it was during your bad day.
This is not to say a bad day is a bad thing. Of course some days will always be a little less fun than other days, how else would we know if we’re having a good time or not. Bad days are a part of life but that’s not to say they can’t be held and looked at in a positive way.
If you are having a bad day and you are thinking about quitting the diet, breaking up with your partner or taking on a new partner, planning your or someone else’s future, or thinking about relapsing into drugs and alcohol again, do yourself this favor. Give yourself some time to relax and start the decision making process again when you at 100 percent.
